The Government has begun to develop the Galle Port as a regional port to expand the current capacity to meet future demands with a new breakwater, harbour basin with a deeper draft and multi-purpose terminal to handle bigger vessels.
The estimated cost of the Galle Port Development Project is US$ 170 million. The Japanese Government has granted US$ 135 million to develop the Galle port as a regional port. The Port’s construction work which commenced in December 2008 is scheduled to be completed by mid 2012, a Ports and Aviation Ministry spokesman told the Daily News yesterday. The development of the regional port in Galle is aimed at realising cost-effective transportation means for the Southern area in a competitive market economy.
The strategic partnership involves the formation of a 50:50 joint venture, Blohm + Voss Naval, for the design and manufacturing of naval surface ships (frigates, corvettes and offshore patrol vessels).
It also involves Abu Dhabi Mar Group owning a majority stake of 80% in the mega yacht business and in each of the companies “Blohm + Voss Shipyards”, “Blohm + Voss Repair” and “Blohm + Voss Industries”.

TACOMA, Wash., Sept. 28, 2009 — Aleutian Yachts, builders of steel expedition yachts from 82 to 122 feet, is now building yachts under its wholly owned subsidiary, Citadel Yachts.
“When we realized that another builder was using the Aleutian name for one of its models, we decided to avoid confusion and re-brand our vessels under the Citadel trademark. This allows us to guarantee our customers the quality and service that falls under our specific brand,” says Greg Ward, CEO of Aleutian Yachts.
Icon Yachts has delivered the first and much anticipated 62-meter yacht, bearing the name plate “Icon”. The vessel launched and delivered in time to appear and make her debut to the world at the recently concluded 19th Monaco Yacht Show (MYS).
The Icon was designed Redman Whiteley Dixon (RWD) and has an interior that was formulated by Studio Linse with project management by Falcon Rydell. Now that Icon has delivered their first vessel, attention now turns to other yachts in their build and development portfolios.

The water off Clearwater Beach soon will be filled with sailboats. The U.S. Multihull Championship begins Sunday and runs through Thursday. The program, being conducted by the Clearwater Yacht Club Race Committee, includes 40 sailors in teams of two racing F-16 Viper sailboats. The winner will be honored with the Hobie Alter Cup Trophy, named for the co-designer of the Hobie Cat sailboat. Paige Railey of Clearwater will be among the racers.
