Boyd Remembrance, Whangaroa Friday 4th to Sunday 6th December Category: CULTURE In December 2009 the Whangaroa Community will be staging a Remembrance event marking the 200th anniversary of the so called Boyd Massacre. This incident occurred in the Whangaroa harbour, north of the Bay of Islands in Northland, in 1809. The Boyd saga was one of the earliest major maritime conflicts between Maori and Pakeha that strained the fledging relationship between two cultures. It raised the profile of New Zealand on the international scene and may have altered the direction of New Zealand history. The circumstances leading up to the sacking of the Boyd (a merchant ship) and the killing of nearly all of its crew and the “reprisal killing” of innocent people the following year are still the subject of much debate and discussion today. The Remembrance weekend will begin with a formal powhiri on Friday 4, followed by a memorial service and hakari (feast) with formal speeches and activities on the Saturday 5. It will conclude with an interdenominational religious service on Sunday 6. There will be a programme of related social, family and recreational activities over the full weekend. Exhibition of Traditional Maori Raranga (Weaving) Kemp House 7th November – 29th November Category: Culture and Heritage The exhibition will mainly feature examples of kete, traditional bags made with woven indigenous plant material, made by a selection of expert weavers from around the Far North District plus some from further afield. Entry to the exhibition will be by koha. In many ways, kete and other examples of raranga provided a sense of common ground between Maori and Pakeha when the missionaries first established the Mission Station, says the Manager of Kerikeri Mission, Liz Bigwood. A number of chiefs daughters lodged at the Mission House where they received basic schooling from the missionaries, including literacy, shown by Rongos slate on display at the Mission House, and domestic skills like cooking and sewing. One of the skills the girls were able to share with the missionaries, however, was raranga. Their work was very evident to at least one prominent visitor. In 1841, Lady Franklin visited and recorded seeing woven flax mats covering every surface, including beds, tables and floors, all likely to have been made by the girls living at Kemp House. There is a long tradition of having raranga adorning Kemp House, it was very much an art form which Maori shared with the missionaries, and which served as part of the function and decoration of the house since its earliest days, says Liz. The exhibition is being organised by two local kete enthusiasts and collectors Toi te Rito Maihi, foundation member of the first national weavers committee formed by Aotearoa Moananui-a-Kiwa in 1984, and Kerikeri artist Chris Booth. In addition to the works on display by Toi Maihi and from the Chris Booth collection, raranga treasures from the Kemp House collection will also be displayed, including a kete gifted to the Kemp family by the mother of VC winner Te Moananui-a-Kiwa Ngarimu. The Art of the Book 1st November to 14th December 2 York Street, Russell 0202 Category: Arts An exhibition based on old books may sound stuffy and boring but Russell Museums The Art of the Book is anything but. Rare books from 1840 to 1960 show a humorous side to Russells social and cultural development. For instance, in Ailments of the NZ Dairy Cow (1929), J E Tomlinson (1929) suggests a treatment for sprains tie the animal in a creek or pond for one hour twice daily. Foulshams Almanack (1934) predicts Crime will be active, and many cases of arson and highway robbery will occur. A well-known actress will be attacked. Advertising for shaving cream, products for married women who lose their looks, and an AA advert for Russell Motor camp stating water is available from a well close to the cookhouse are amusing glimpses of historical reality.
