DESPITE battling fierce weather the Inspiring Capital sailing boat has now reached eighth place in the battle to win the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race.
Violent winds caused Edinburgh’s entry in the 10-boat race to experience its first squall – a sudden, sharp increase in wind speed, which can cause a vessel to capsize.
Skipper Matt Pike said: “I woke up from a short sleep to find myself having to climb vertically out of my bunk. I made my way quickly to the companionway and on deck. We were pinned down in a squall but luckily not for long.”
Two weeks ago the boat was lagging in last place after experiencing a spinnaker wrap, where the main sail becomes tangled.
The race continues until July 2010.
