BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. — The future looks bright for Jason Burgess.
Ten months into his probationary period as a Bonita Springs firefighter, the 38-year-old coolly handled a situation that many firefighters never face in a career.
Burgess saved a 92-year-old retiree when he pulled the man out of a burning room in a Fort Myers retirement home.

One of my favourite spots in Toronto is the Toronto Islands, that lovely patch of land right in front of downtown Toronto, separated by just a sliver of water. So close, yet so far from the city’s hustle and bustle. One of the biggest events on the Islands is the Toronto Dragonboat Festival, a family event organized by the Toronto Chinese Business Association. In addition to being a great entertainment event, the Dragonboat Festival is also a big fundraiser for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, so it’s not just fun, it’s also for a good cause.

* Mojib Latif, based at the Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences at Kiel University in Germany, one of the world’s top climate modellers, and a member of the IPCC.

ROYAL Solent Yacht Club’s Turkey Cup race took place off Yarmouth with a fleet of 30 yachts taking part.
They raced as one class for the hotly contested Christmas turkey (awarded for second place) as well as the more usual trophies.
Even open XOD and YOD boats, many of whom are normally laid up this late in the season, entered this very popular event.

Love this air-conditioner cover ("Tape & painted cardboard on window AC unit cover, Bushwick, Brooklyn NY") snapped by Flickr user Dbilly.
